In one of those pre-chapter vignettes by way of introduction there is a short story. Someone tells the author that he is having difficulty figuring out what the unifying theme of his work is. After a bit of discussion, and after a few people have contributed what they think the unifying theme may be, someone else pipes up.

“How old are you, young man? Late twenties?” He turns to the others. “Fellows, he’s young. Why does he need a unifying theme?”

That is how I feel. I don’t have a unifying theme. Not for this present blog. Not for my life’s direction. Sorry.

Neither a vegan, a baker, nor mom-photographer I be.

I thought a lot of self-discovery was meant to be hammered out in adolescence, and we’d all know what we “want to be” by the time we are fifteen, but I am still working through it. Okay, I only know a few people who are convincedly doing what they think they are meant to be doing. But hey, the school system has to present us with some sort of model and motivation.

Besides the over-arching purpose for my life, I don’t have a clue about things. Sometimes I don’t know what my talents and gifts are. I am not even sure what tell people over small talk when they ask about my hobbies and interests. What am I interested in???

“Is it [the blog] informational? Is it girly? Is it deep? Is it funny?” I don’t know. “What does it all mean?” I don’t know. For heavens sake, I hope it’s not cliche. Whatever. I am sure it’s not all for naught.

My best thoughts and revelations seem to come out of several related conversations and situations and information that at some point converges at an intersection of some new understanding. So this is a good thing. To keep at it anyhow.

To draw the analogy together, I am hoping that as I forge ahead with this blog and with my life that at some point some unifying theme will similarly emerge. Until then, I am having fun anyway.

Time difference. I end up talking to people at midnight, because it’s finally evening over in the States.

Hurricanes. When I see a large glass store front, thinking about the hassle during hurricane season.

Skirts. My light, cotton skirts are made possible with the help of leggings, boots, and two shirts. Sometimes a cardigan too.

NASA. I heard a loud noise the other night and immediately thought it must have been the sonic boom.

So not true. I got a package from a friend last week. It made my day. Possibly my week. What she gave me was incredibly awesome and thoughtful, but the mere fact of getting a pudgy envelope in the mail from someone who was thinking of me was of surpassing encouragement.

Plus, she’s abroad herself, and I’ve never gotten mail from Taiwan before.

I remember sending jolly ranchers to someone in deep Africa or Central Europe when I was young.  I personally think Jolly Ranchers are gross, but I know now what it must have been like to get the comforts of home.

In fact, if you have any of the following (and have a deal with Fed Ex), feel free to send it on:

- Yellow rice
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Hazelnut creamer
- White running socks from Target

Sometimes, I do things I don’t want to do. Sometimes I want to do things and don’t do them. Sometimes I want to do things and find myself uncapable of pulling them off. Sometimes I don’t want to do things but can’t seem to find a way not to.

As I near the dawn of my twenty-third year, I could look forward with optimism. Hope that in the year of my birth three and twenty, I’ll shape up. But I thought that about myself before the new year, and before I came to England, and before I graduated from college. On the approach of any major time-marker, I usually imagine that this will be the dawn of an irrepressibly good era.

But I’m slowly catching on.

It’s not worth talking about how it’s very frustrating to constantly know you’re not measuring up. If you’re any bit of a candid human, you’ll admit that sometimes (at least once or twice year) you feel frustration, and just maybe it might be directed at yourself.

My wish for the ideal even extends to my humble blog(s). I just bought a custom domain. I decided to do this because I’m unashamedly smitten with blogging, and I thought I’d like to have one url that I really liked. And maybe, if I really liked it, I could use the umbrella domain to encapsulate all my blogging tendencies.

Then, just maybe, I could just blog at one sight instead of three. If my plan goes according to specifications, soon I’ll start blogging exclusively at fromtheflat.com. Get it?

This has been Philosophizings from the Flat. And I like that concept. I have had to scrap mythopoetic name, though, as from the flat has sprung from that blog. Without giving too much away (to avoid creating too much expectation), I hope to include what I like to write about here there, along with what I like to write about there.

To my fewer boy readers, among my few readers, please don’t be afraid. Sometimes I may be compelled to put something somewhat girly, but I hope to not diminish my beefier thoughts, and will post them whenever I discover them burgoening in the collection things I’m mulling over.

So when everything is neat and tidy, I’ll make a big announcement, post a big link to over there, and shamelessly plug the new super-blog. Until then, keep an ear here and as well as at fromtheflat.com.

It’s a night to celebrate the Scottish poet Robert Burns (no relation to me). Among other things, he wrote “Auld Lang Syne”. These appear to be the main components:

- haggis (if you don’t know what it is wikipedia it)

- an address to the haggis. this is sweet. here is the traditional address.

- eating tatties and neeps alongside the haggis. tatters= mashed potatoes and neeps= swede or rutabaga

- ceilidh dancing (scottish dancing)
